Copies of Frescoes Housed by Museum of Macedonia to Be Presented in Sofia

An exhibition titled 'Copies of Frescoes from the Museum of Macedonia Collection' will be opened on Thursday evening at the Macedonian Cultural and Informative Center in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The head of the center, Vasko Sutarov, and Mirjana Nincovska, the director of the Museum of Macedonia, will officially open the show. According to Sutarov, this is the most significant project of the center's 2016 program. The Museum of Macedonia expressed content from the successful cooperation and openness for future joint exhibition projects, the center said in a press release.

The collection consists of 240 copies, gathered throughout the years as a sort of a museum archive of frescoes found in Macedonian churches and monasteries. Iconographic representations of vast cultural and historical importance have been copied, which have contributed to the development of fresco painting in Macedonia that has found its proper specific place in the overall Byzantine art.

The display is to feature 22 copies of frescoes dating from the tenth to the 14th century, as well as a selection of churches that are considered the most important accomplishments of the mature Byzantine architecture in Macedonia.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see visual iconofraphic representations of compositions belonging to both the Old and the New Testaments, scenes of religious services, images of Christian dignitaries, saints and scenes of their lives.
