Minister of Transport of Turkey, Binali Yildirim, on Sunday is to be elected president of the ruling Turkish Party of Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Prime Minister of the country.

Yildirim is a close ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and he will replace Ahmet Davutoglu, who resigned from the leadership of the party and as prime minister after a series of disagreements with the President.

"Yildirim is the only candidate for the AKP leader and he will be elected on Sunday at a special party congress", party spokesman Omer Celik said.

Yildirim said that his nomination is the result of consultations between approximately 800 important members of the AKP.

"We will use all reasonable efforts to work in total harmony, especially with our founder and leader, and then with our colleagues at all levels of the party to fulfill the goals of our country", Yildirim said.

Erdogan, though after assuming the presidency is no longer on the leading position of the AKP, is considered its founder and spiritual leader.
