Criminals transporting illegal immigrants to western Europe are becoming more active, warned Austrian authorities.
Police in the region of Upper Austria has recently intercepted a truck with 27 immigrants, Iraqi and Afghan nationals, 16 of whom were children. The organizer of the trafficking, a Ukrainian national, tried to escape during the inspection, but he was arrested.
He took the immigrants from Hungary, and drove them through Austria toward Germany. This is only one in the string of frequent activities of the migrant traffickers, Austrian police informed.
The National Criminal Intelligence Office has seen an increased activity of criminals, said the office's representative, Colonel Gerald Tazgern, adding that traffickers come mostly from Serbia and Ukraine, and usually use the route through Hungary toward Austria.
