The port of Piraeus is full of refugees and migrants, who live there in tents and under terrible conditions, and some of them, by chance even mix with the tourists who are arriving in luxury cruiser boats, Kathimerini wrote Wednesday.
The newspaper cited official data, showing that on Tuesday a total of 50,364 refugees have stayed in Greece, half of whom (28,550) are in northern Greece, and 11,370 of those are in the region of Idomeni on the border with Macedonia.
Of the total number of refugees in the country, 4,242 have been situated on the islands, 14,698 are in the area of Attica, and 5,600 are on the port of Piraeus. Other 2,874 are situated in central Greece.
Kathimerini newspaper informed that there have been tensions in Idomeni, after police have tried to remove the refugees from the railway. They threw stones at the police, and freed a woman who was supposed to be detained.
According to the Union of Officers, last year from the Turkish coast to the Greek island arrived a total of 1 million refugees. In 2,931 of the registered cases, a total of 103,371 people have been rescued, compared to this year - when that number totaled in 43,185 people. They warned that of a total of 240 boats, 36 are not functional, 4 of 7 airplanes are not available for exploitation, and only 1 of the 6 helicopters can perform operational tasks.
