Australian Olympic 100m hurdles champion Sally Pearson is unable to complete Rio Games due to injury, BBC reports.

Pearson, 29, who won gold at London 2012, has torn her hamstring in training, Australian media reported on Wednesday.

Australia's track and field captain only returned from injury in June but appears unlikely to make the Olympics, which start on 5 August. She is due to hold a news conference on Thursday. The Australian Olympic team's chef de mission, Kitty Chiller, said "it doesn't look good" for Pearson.

"It is just such a shame for a fantastic champion, a fantastic fighter and if she doesn't run in Rio I'll be very, very sad for Sally and the team," Chiller added.

Meanwhile, the Australian Olympic team tweeted: "Sad to read injury reports on Sally Pearson. She was fighting to be fit for Rio."

The 2011 world champion and 2008 Olympic silver medallist missed the end of the 2015 season after shattering her wrist competing in Rome. The athlete has struggled with track times since her return and finished last at Norway's Diamond League event earlier this month.
