Famous Macedonian Cartoonist Darko Markovic Dies at 76

Macedonian cartoonist and film director Darko Markovic has died in Skopje in the 76th year of his life.

He is best known for his cartoons of the character named Pecko, which have been published for decades in various newspapers, containing a satirical view of Macedonian life and politics.

Markovic studied architecture and later animation in Zagreb. He published his first cartoons in 1960, and was named editor-in-chief of the satirical Osten magazine in 1966.

In 1975 he took up a position in Vardar Film, where he opened an animated film studio, and became a professor at the Arts Faculty in Skopje in 1988.

Markovic lived and worked in London between 1988 and 1995, when he returned to Macedonia. His best known animated films are "Border" (1976), "Chair" (1976), "White Cannon" (1977) and "Circus" (1979).
