A solution to the deep crisis in Macedonia is possible by elections where voters have the final say on the future, says Kurt Volker, executive director of the McCain Institute for International Leadership and former United States Ambassador to NATO.
"The exit will be the elections. It is important to have a government that has been given renewed faith and confidence from the people. That would be a way out. It is difficult road to get there. When you look at these sorts of pardons or prosecutions, it can go both ways. You can either be protecting people who should be subject to the rule of law, and that would be a problem. You could also see that the judiciary may prosecute people that have been in the government because there is retribution. Getting this right is really difficult. What is important now is that it's a level playing field for everybody, anyone is subject to being investigated", Volker told Voice of America in Macedonian Language.
According to Volker, it is important to create a process of credible elections, purge the voters registry and create comprehensive conditions for elections that would be held in a free and transparent way.
"Parties and leaders who win at these elections will be the ones to take the country out of the crisis it is in", stressed Volker.
