With a declared win in the state of New Jersey, Hillary Clinton reached the number of delegates she needs to win the nomination of the Democratic Party for a US president.
Her challenger, Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders, said he will continue his campaign, even as President Barack Obama invited the two candidates who have divided the party to a meeting in the White House.
Results are still due in the symbolic California primary, which Sanders tried to win despite Clinton having a strong advantage ahead of the vote.
Sanders captured the youth vote and the support of the far left wing of the party, disenchanted with Clinton and the long string of scandals and corruption allegations that follow her.
With his unexpectedly strong showing and the large number of delegates and states won, Sanders is expected to try to influence the Democratic Convention scheduled for mid-July in Philadelphia, when the party is expected to officially select its candidate for the November Presidential elections.
