Election results indicate the main leftist party in Romania has made gains in local elections that were marked by concerns about political corruption, the Washington Post reports.

Election authorities released by election authorities early Monday show that Gabriela Firea, a former TV journalist and member of the center-left Social Democratic Party, won the post of mayor of Bucharest, scoring about 43 percent of the vote.

The party also won all six seats for district mayor in the capital.

The Social Democratic Party resigned from government in November, following a series of street protests organized after a deadly nightclub fire that prompted corruption concerns.

The mayors of Brasov and Craiova, who have been indicted for taking kickbacks, both managed to win a re-election. The mayor of Baia Mare, jailed for corruption charges, was also easily re-elected.
