US Presidentials: Hillary Clinton Appears Closer to Securing Democratic Nomination

Hillary Clinton won the Democratic Party primary elections in the territory of Puerto Rico, confirming her lead among minority voters and getting closer to the 2,383 delegates she needs to win the nomination.

Clinton beat her challenger, Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders, with 64 percent of the votes, against his 35. This returns some confidence in her campaign, as the two head toward California.

Clinton should easily secure the remaining few dozen delegates she needs, but a possible defeat in California to Sanders would be extremely damaging to her and could guarantee drama at the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia, when the delegates will meet to choose the party nominee.

Much of Clinton's advantage over Sanders is owed to super delegates - party officials who can shift their allegiance - and Sanders supporters have announced protests to target these delegates.

Sanders insists that, after performing much stronger against Clinton than anybody could expect, and after winning most northern states, with high concentrations of white and young voters, he desires a say in shaping the convention which is scheduled for July 25.

Sanders continues to fight against Clinton, accusing her of her support for military interventions such as Iraq, and of her ties with big banks and companies, which have donated heavily to both her campaign and the Clinton foundation.

Clinton's inability to defeat what was supposed to be an easy challenger also signals her potential weakness against likely Republican nominee Donald Trump.
