President Gjorge Ivanov acts exclusively in the interests of the citizens, his office said, after last week’s call from the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Brian Hoyt Yee, that the decision to pardon violates the rule of law and the principle of responsibility.

Asked by Voice of America whether the president is considering to withdraw the abolition, his office said:

"President Ivanov, as before, and in the future will only act under the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Macedonia, and solely in the interest of citizens", his office said briefly.

The office do not comment on future actions of Ivanov, regarding the reconsideration of the decision for abolition.

With the latest amendments to the Law on pardon, the President is given the opportunity to revoke a pardon without a preliminary procedure to pardon within 30 days of the adoption of this law, and the president is not obliged to explain the decision.

With the amendment of this law, a person for who a decision to pardon is adopted, shall be entitled to submit an application for annulment of his pardon to the President of the Republic and the president shall, within 30 days of submission of the request to annul the decision.
