The leader of the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Akhtar Mansour, was killed in an attack of United States drone, Taliban commander Mullah Abdul Rauf said.
He noted that Mansoor was killed on late Friday night in the border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The office of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, confirmed that the attack was carried out, but could not confirm whether Mansour was killed.
Prime Minister Abdullah Abdullah, however, said Mansour was "probably" killed.
Mansour led the Talibans, since last summer the death of the founder of the movement, Mohammed Omar was announced.
