Clock Is Ticking as Parties Need to File Lawmakers Lists

The deadline for submitting candidates' lists by the political parties for the early June 5 general elections expires on Wednesday at midnight, Telegraf.mk reads.

However, according to the current look of things, it is highly unlikely all political parties in Macedonia will file their proposals for seats in parliament. For the time being, only VMRO-DPMNE announced it would submit MPs lists, while the other parties will use the remaining time to tacticise more.

Opposition SDSM is certain in its intentions to boycott the elections, and most probably, DUI and DPA will follow the same position. The parties representing Albanian interests are under a strong pressure not to file lawmakers' lists, thus fulfilling Zoran Zaev's wish to postpone the ballot.

Political factors are largely predicting the next date of elections, but also the type of government that will be in charge of their realization. Whether the current technical government headed by Emil Dimitriev that also features ministers coming from SDSM lines will remain or whether a new expert executive will be established, such as the one set up in Macedonia after its independence, remains to be revealed later on.

Another problem is the postponement of the June 5 ballot, if the fact that the Assembly is dissolved is taken under consideration, as well as the lack of a constitutional possibility to summon the lawmakers.

Zaev's interview in the Austrian Der Standard newspaper is another proof he is not pondering the likelihood of running at elections, because he does not mention any date when a vote could be staged.

On the top of everything, the statements issued by EU Ambassador to Macedonia Aivo Orav on Tuesday, and the European Commission spokeswoman, Maja Kocijancic, clearly show the 28-member bloc does not have a clear method on solving the Macedonian political crisis and that there are no guarantees that the opposition leader could stop postponing the parliamentary elections indefinitely.
