The Council of Public Prosecutors said it would not hand over two cases to Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva, who on Wednesday appeared before the body to elaborate her legal obligation surrounding her institution's authority over the requested legal procedures.

The two cases are known as 'Magyar Telekom', involving high levels of corruption, and the 'Verusevski' case, in connection to former intelligence chief Zoran Verusevski and his son Goran.

"The cases 'Magyar Telekom' and 'Verusevski' will not be handed over to the Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPO), because the cases are already being processed by the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office and the Prosecutor's Office for organized crime and corruption," Petar Anevski, president of the Council of Public Prosecutors, told reporters after the session.

No one is challenging Janeva in the opening of new investigations, he added, but the SPO is tasked with probing cases in accordance with the law on public prosecution on prosecuting crimes related to and arising from the content of illegal interception of communications from 2008 to June 15, 2015.

Anevski said Janeva had informed the Council of her intentions not to attend other sessions.

"By saying so, she had demonstrated disrespect towards the Council of Public Prosecutors where she is obliged to present and elaborate reports," Anevski said.

Earlier, Janeva said she had explained to the prosecutors at the Council that the SPO was legally obligated to take over the cases 'Magyar Telekom' and 'Verusevski'.

"We didn't discuss other issues," she stated.

"Being autonomous, I'm not obliged to appear before the Council and to attend sessions or to elaborate the report of SPO's work," noted Janeva.
