The US government has unlocked the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino shooters and has backed out its legal case against Apple, Euronews has learnt.

The technological giant company has been dealing with a court order, under which it was required to write new software to enter into the encrypted handset of Rizwan Farook.

Now, officials claim assistance from another source has enabled access to data on the cell phone.

Farook and his wife, who died in a shootout with police forces, previously killed 14 people in California last December.

The dismissal of the legal case is a victory for Apple, which on Monday, did not make any comment.

However, major issues remain over future access to phone data.

Tech industry officials and expert deem that anything that helps authorities by-pass features will undermine security for users.

But Washington claims blocking access to data will immobilize all kinds of criminal investigations.

Tech industry leaders including Google, Facebook and Microsoft and more than two dozen other companies filed legal briefs supporting Apple.

The Justice Department, on the other hand, got support from law enforcement groups and six relatives of San Bernardino victims.
