Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner, known for her harsh viewpoints toward asylum seekers and refugees, is stepping down to dedicate herself to regional politics, her People's Party said.
The party has informed that they have nominated Wolfgang Sobotka for a new minister, who is currently in charge of the finances in the regional government of Lower Austria.
Mikl-Leitner has been the main supporter in the more restrictive Austrian asylum policy and closing the migrant route from Greece toward western Europe through Austria, or the so-called Balkan route.
She has served as an interior minister since 2011.
