At around 10:30 am on Sunday, three well-organized groups of migrants from the make-shift camp in Idomeni tried to illegally cross the Macedonian-Greek border at three different locations somewhere between the border elevation 59 and village Moin, the regional crisis management center reported.

This information was also confirmed to MIA by the manager of the Transit-Reception center in Gevgelija, Zoran Lazorovski.

"The three groups of migrants, comprised of 500-700 people, who have been staying at Idomeni camp for a longer period of time tried to illegally cross the border and damaged the protective fence on three locations somewhere between the border elevation 59 and Moin village", Lazarovski said.

The group headed towards the border-line fence separating Greece and Macedonia and the migrants started to throw stones towards the Macedonian policemen which were deployed along the fence as soon as the disturbances started.

Due to the timely response, in which the Macedonian police used shock and tear gas bombs, and in combination with the intervention by the Greek police, the groups were cut short in their attempt to cross the border and they were sent back to the Idomeni camp.

Currently, police and army presence at the border is boosted, the situation is stable and the migrants have been returned to the Idomeni camp.

According to reports by RT citing Greek media, migrants were handed pamphlets with instructions to massively head towards the fence and to cross the border. "Today we cross or we die" were the words the migrants were chanting while they headed towards the border, RT reports.

Last month, EU reached a deal with Turkey, who agreed to take back all of the migrants sent back from Greece. In return, EU promiced to take in Syrian refugees from Turkey. According to statistics, over 1 million migrants and refugees entered the EU in 2015, most of them from Syria.
