The number of people who are older than 35 and live with diabetes has increased four-fold since 1980, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced ahead of World Health Day on April 7.
"422 million people were diagnosed with diabetes in 2014 globally, while the number in 1980 was 108 million people", WHO reported.
The disease caused the death of 1.5 million people in 2012.
The WHO points out that a key factor for the increase of people with diabetes is drinking sugary beverages.
In Macedonia, 576,813 people have diabetes, 16,231 of them are newly diagnosed with pre-diabetes, 3,007 are at high risk, while 1,503 are expected to get diabetes.
