In a week in which England is all about the leaving, their national football team is coming home after suffering a shock defeat at the hands of Iceland at the European Football Championship.
Wayne Rooney put England ahead through a penalty awarded in the 4th minute, only to see Iceland even the score two minutes later and then take the lead in the 18th minute via Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson. The English team tried all they could, but were unable to organize themselves and looked hapless in front of the Icelandic goal for the remaining 70 minutes.
This brings Iceland to the quarter-finals, where they will face hosts France. In the other match played on Monday afternoon, Italy outclassed defending champions Spain and beat them 2:0. For Italy, the road to the semi-finals now leads through Germany. The quarter-finals begin on Thursday, with Poland playing Portugal, followed by the Wales Belgium match on Friday in Lille.
