At least 40 Czech police officers are to be deployed along Macedonia's southern border with Greece.

The Czech Republic has joined a number of other central European countries who supported Macedonia in closing the border in early 2016 and stopping the flow of migrants along the Balkan route.

"Border pressures are reduced, but that does not mean the crisis is over. The help we received from the Czech Republic, with the dispatch of police contingents at the moment when the crisis was the most critical, was of great help to us", Macedonian Ambassador to Prague Paskal Stojceski said.

Ambassador Stojceski added that there is still need to continuously monitor the border, with the support of the additional Slovakian, Hungarian, Slovenian, Croatian and Serbian police forces. Macedonia saw over a million people cross over from Greece, in 2015 and the start of 2016.

Nearly all of these refugees and migrants continued their trip north, through Serbia. The crisis was ended with the EU Turkey agreement that also provided for the closure of the Macedonian border.
