Seventy research fellows from 17 countries are going to be a part of the 49th International Seminar on Macedonian Language, Literature and Culture in Ohrid, organized by the Skopje-based Ss. Cyril and Methodious University.

“Language carries the identity of every nation. I think we need to raise our awareness that language is a full cultural concept and this is what unites us in our identity. We keep talking about recognition of the language. We should, once and for all, abandon this concept. When people from 17 countries, linguists as far as from China and South Korea, are interested in learning Macedonian, then there is no better way to promote the identity and the uniqueness of our language,” Slavica Veleva, the seminar’s director, said opening the event.

This year marks several milestones, including the 1,100th anniversary of the death of St. Clement of Ohrid, founder of the Ohrid Literary School, 70th anniversary of the first grammar of Macedonian contemporary language and 70th anniversary of publishing the first children’s books in Macedonian.

Leading experts from Macedonia and abroad will present their latest research findings related to Macedonian language studies at the seminar taking place until June 26.

Classes at the seminar, held in Macedonian language, include activities for participants to learn Macedonian through courses divided according to their level of expertise of the language.

The seminar on June 25-26 will host the 43rd International Scientific Conference.
