Economy Minister Driton Kuqi addressed Friday conference "Energy Security and Environmental Challenges in Western Balkan Countries: the Macedonian Case", held at the Southeast European University in Skopje.

Minister Kuqi said the Stabilization and Association Agreement provided obligations for Macedonia in the energy sector related to harmonization of the national legislation with the EU law, liberalization and development of the energy market and its integration in the single European market.

Kuqi stressed the 2015 Western Balkans Summit in Vienna produced a joint declaration over the establishment of a regional cooperation office and an agenda encompassing the so-called soft energy measures referring to the creation of an energy exchange, cross-border balancing, regional distribution of capacities and cross-cutting measures.

Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Bashkim Ameti highlighted the effect of climate change on energy, economy and the society.

According to him, energy security can be tackled if one takes into consideration the long-term scenarios from climate change, especially the link between energy production from renewable sources and the hydro-potential.

The conference also included university professors and experts.
