Protesters from the opposition SDSM party and supportive NGO groups gathered in front of a police station in down town Skopje on Monday evening, after a driver of a van carrying their protest equipment was briefly detained.
Novica Pavic was stopped as he was carrying paint and other equipment used by the SDSM protesters in the nearly two-month long protests. About a 100 protesters gathered in front of the police station to demand his release, which happened shortly.
Pavic's lawyer said that the equipment, which included water pistols used to spray paint and painting brushes, was seized. In the past weeks, several protest organizers were put in house detention for violent protesting, and several more were fined for throwing paint at public buildings and monuments.
SDSM insists that they have the right to continue throwing paint across the capital, and in several other cities where they hold their protests.
The protests started with the request to cancel the early elections scheduled for June 5, and to revoke pardons President Gjorge Ivanov gave in relation with the wiretapping affair and other charges. Elections have been cancelled, and President Ivanov has also revoked the pardons for all the politicians on the list.
