Migrants Rescued Adrift on New Greece-Italy Sea Route

A group of 29 migrants, including two children, have been rescued off the Greek island of Lefkada on their way to Italy, Euronews has learnt.

The discovery of the boat has increased fears about a new smuggling route, as this was the first time the migrants to try out this path since the closing of the land border between Greece and Macedonia in March this year.

The migrants whose nationalities are still unknown were seemingly abandoned 27 kilometers from Lefkada, while Italy is over 240 kilometers away.

Meanwhile a photograph showing a drowned migrant baby held by a German rescuer has been published by a humanitarian organization.

'Sea-Watch' spokesperson Ruben Neugebauer said: "It's still the same tragedy of people dying in the Mediterranean sea, and so this picture should have the same effect as maybe the picture of Aylan had, and I hope that we can at least touch some people with this because we have to know as Europeans we have to be responsible for this situation".

The image of the baby, like that of three-year-old Syrian boy Aylan whose body was washed up on the Turkish coast last year, reminds of the human face to the 8,000-plus people gone missing in the Mediterranean since the start of 2014.
