European Parliament Speaker Martin Schulz called on Turkey to accomplish its obligations as soon as possible, and warned that the European Union might stop the introduction of visa free travel for Turkish citizens.
Schulz said that Turkey has failed to meet a number of important steps needed to achieve visa liberalization, such as changes to the law on protection of data and anti-terror laws. "The Turkish Parliament needs to begin an urgent debate on these changes", Schulz said. He is seen as one of the top critics of the agreement in which Turkey helped stop the flow of migrants toward Europe, in exchange for financial support, reopening its accession talks and visa liberalization for Turkish citizens.
Schulz says that, without reforms, visas won't be lifted by October, as is now expected. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned that, if the agreement fails, Turkey will not keep up its end of the bargain and the migrant crisis might resume.
