A huge fire at a building where the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow used to be housed was finally put under control on Sunday evening after emitting plumes of smoke over the Russian capital, Euronews reports.
Some 50 people were evacuated from the administrative building that dates back to the end of the 18th century. No reports of casualties have emerged.
Hundreds of firefighters and several cranes were deployed, whereas traffic through central Moscow was diverted.
A source told Interfax the fire may have been prompted by a short circuit cut involving old electrical wiring.
The Emergency Situations Ministry said the blaze had covered an area of at least 50 square meters.
The Defense Ministry moved to a new headquarters on the Moskva River in 2014 but still kept the old building near the Kremlin.
