The parliamentary Appointments Committee is set to convene on Friday to discuss the proposal put forward by the opposition SDSM party regarding the impeachment proceedings against President Gjorge Ivanov.
SDSM requested the president's impeachment of the president following his decision in early April to issue pardons to politicians from both sides of the political divide who were charged for crimes arising from the wiretapping affair.
The impeachment requires two-third majority in Parliament and in the Constitutional Court.
The ruling VMRO-DPMNE party, which holds a little under half of the members of Parliament, said it will not support SDSM's proposal.
Ivanov was elected in 2009 and reelected in 2014 on the VMRO-DPMNE ticket.
The parliamentary committee should decide on Friday on forming a Commission that would, in seven days, evaluate SDSM's impeachment proposal, before it is taken to the full Parliament.
A set of amendments adopted earlier this month opened the door for President Ivanov to revoke his pardons, if those that received them ask him to, or if he decides to do so within a 30-day period.
