NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the upcoming summit in Warsaw in early July will be a watershed moment for the Alliance, with its plans to deploy a more robust presence in Eastern Europe in order to push back against an assertive Russia.
Stoltenberg announced that NATO will approve a new multinational military presence in its easternmost member states in order to send a clear signal that an attack on one of the allies would constitute attack on the entire Alliance.
Some of NATO's members that share a border with Russia, like Estonia, are nervous over the commitment of their allies to protect them if Russian provocations grow into serious pressure.
Stoltenberg said that the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany have already promised to take a major part in the eastern deployment, which will include four battalions.
