An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was registered on Sunday at 10:58 am with epicenter at 150 kilometers southeast of Skopje, in neighboring Bulgaria.
According to the Seismological Observatory of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Faculty, the earthquake was felt in the Republic of Macedonia in Berovo, Pehcevo, Delcevo and Skopje and the surrounding area.
On Saturday afternoon several earthquakes rocked the Macedonian cities.
Ohrid, Bitola, Struga, Demir Hisar were the towns the felt at least four earthquakes in a row of which one section shook the territory of almost the whole of Macedonia, and were felt in Albania. Tremors were relatively strong, 4.8 on the Richter scale and mostly felt in the higher buildings.
According to the seismological data published on the World map of earthquakes,which collects data from the seismological observatories on the Balkans, the first earthquake occurred at 18:33 pm, 85 kilometers southwest of Skopje, in the region of Demir Hisar. The earthquake measured 4.8 on the Richter scale and was at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Soon after,a second earthquake followed, stronger than the first, or measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale. It was 82 km southwest of Skopje, again near Demir Hisar, at a depth of 5 km. Third earthquake occurred at 19.16 pm, 93 kilometers southwest of Skopje, near Slepce in Demir Hisar and had a magnitude of 4.4 degrees.
Fourth earthquake was also felt, in the vicinity of Resen, and measuring 3.2 on Richter scale. The quake was at a depth of five kilometers.
Some of the inhabitants of the cities in the western parts of the country left their homes, especially after the second earthquake, fearing a major earthquake. According to the map of earthquakes there were tremors Saturday morning in the same region, but this earthquake was with a magnitude of two degrees. Except the panic among the population, so far there are no calls for possible material damage.
