The abolition decision from April 12 brought by the country's President undermines the rule of law and the principle of responsibility. This abolition not only damages the rule of law but it undercuts the credibility of Macedonia as a country which is determined to integrate into Euro-Atlantic institutions. It is very important for leaders to mend the damage which was inflicted with this decision and they must do it in a clear and unambiguous manner as soon as possible.
This was stated by the deputy assistant of the State Secretary of the State Department, Hoyt Yee, after he held meetings and talks with the political leaders of the country over the past two days. He pointed out that the focus of his meetings on Wednesday and Thursday was the April 12 abolition decision.
"If the leaders do not revoke the abolition decision partially or selectively, this will increase the feeling of unaccountability and irresponsibility in the country. A sense of responsibility implies that the party leaders should fully trust and support the judicial institutions, including the Special Public Prosecutors' Office. As long as there is a lack of resolution in relation to the claims about illegal activities connected to the wiretapped materials, including other criminal acts, Macedonia will remain stuck in this crisis and it will not be able to advance toward her most important goals which include its Euro-Atlantic integration", the diplomat said.
We believe that the Government, through its activities, must show its dedication to forming a robust and pluralistic democracy, and for implementing the reforms agreed in the Przino Agreement. That means an inclusion of the opposition and the stances of the people from the civil sector. This inclusion, Yee said, will be key in implementing the system of control and balance in relation to the power of the Government which Macedonia needs so it can move forward.
"In order for Macedonia to have a healthy democracy and to return on its Euro-Atlantic path, it must renew its commitment toward the principles of a pluralistic democracy, the rule of law, balance and transparency. By doing so it will not go back to previous practices. For years, the US have been a strong and trustworthy partner to Macedonia. That is why, we call on Macedonian leaders to undertake the activities which I have mentioned, to implement the reforms from the Przino Agreement, to fortify the institutions and to build a new, responsible government. If the leaders do that, then the US will continue to support their efforts and it will remain a strong partner", Yee stated.
During his visit, Yee met with the political leaders of the parties signatories of the Przino Agreement.
