'Pavel Satev' Institute Poll: Macedonians Have Low Opinion of Special Prosecutor, International Mediation Efforts

A poll conducted by the conservative "Pavel Satev" think tank has shown that 60 percent of Macedonians do not trust the work of the Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva, while 54.4 percent believe that international diplomats involved in mediating the crisis are only making matters worse.

The poll comes after a businessman who was being investigated by the Special Prosecutor's Office allegedly committed suicide, with media outlets blaming Janeva's office for exerting pressure against him.

Janeva was appointed to investigate the 2015 wiretapping affair and her office filed charges against a number of officials from the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party for various allegations of wrongdoing, but failed to move forward on the cases involving the opposition SDSM officials and former secret service officials who are charged together with SDSM for providing them with illegally wiretapped conversations.

This has prompted President Gjorge Ivanov to issue broad pardons to officials from both VMRO-DPMNE and SDSM.

The survey showed that only 25.2 percent of the respondents said they have faith in Janeva's work.

Asked whether the international mediators and their actions are helping resolve the crisis, 54.4 percent said that they are only deepening the problems, while 21.1 percent said that the mediators are helping.

The European Union-appointed mediator Peter Vanhoutte has been dismissed after he posted series of cat tweets aimed against VMRO-DPMNE.

Talks are normally mediated by the EU and US Ambassadors in Macedonia, with a German diplomat arriving on Thursday for his first visit.

The poll covered 1,070 citizens from all across Macedonia, excluding ethnic Albanians, to provide more accurate information on the voting preferences between VMRO-DPMNE and SDSM, "Pavel Satev" informed.
