Skopje Student Gave Birth at Border Crossing, Ditched Her Baby and Continued Her Trip across Europe

A 23-year-old student from Skopje, who was on her way on a graduation tour across Europe, gave birth to a child at the Tabanovce border crossing, Telegraf.mk has learnt.

After the excursion was over she got arrested. In the meantime, the baby died, and was found by employees at the Macedonian border with Serbia.

The student identified as T.I. aged 23 from Skopje is to answer before the court for killing a child during delivery.

According to the Interior Ministry, the student was already 8 months pregnant, but there are no official records she was given prenatal care or that she had any medical exams performed. In March, she went to attend the traditional graduation tour across Europe.

On March 29, around 11:30 am, at the Tabanovce border crossing, while waiting for the passport control, she felt strong pains in the abdomen and went to the toilet where she delivered the child. She then left the baby in a garbage bin. After this, she returned to the bus and continued her journey.

After the staff at the border discovered the newborn's body, the incident was reported at the Interior Ministry's sector in Kumanovo, and following the intensive investigation, the authorities contacted the organizers of the trip. Meanwhile, the student was taken to a gynecology clinic in Prague on March 30.

After the excursion was over, on April 18, when she entered into Macedonia, she was taken under custody and underwent additional medical exams.

Officials with the Interior Ministry pointed the findings of the investigation suggest that regardless of the gestational week, the newborn baby who was born alive, would have survived had it been born in appropriate hospital conditions.
