A three-day general strike has kicked off Friday in Greece, as a sign of protest against the proposed austerity measures that are to be voted in parliament.

The trade unions have said a 48-hour strike will take place, which is complementary to the walkout already announced for Sunday.

State services do not work, as well as some private sector companies, the public transport is non functional and journalists have also joined the general strike.

Hospitals are to admit emergency cases only, dentists have closed down their offices, whereas lawyers and legal firms have closed their premises.

The ferries operating to and from the Greek islands have halted their work until Tuesday.

The Greek authorities have tried to negotiate with the trade unions of the ports' employees to allow at least one ferry to operate, given the fact that tourists have already arrived at the islands, but an agreement was not reached.

Greek MPs are discussing pension reforms that need to be implemented in line with the agreement reached with the creditors. The vote on the draft bill is expected to be held on Sunday evening.
